Change the Color of a Celery Stalk

To get kids to eat their vegetables, forget about explaining the nutritional value of a balanced diet. Instead, make eating vegetables fun. Dying celery stalks is one way to involve your kids in a little kitchen science and provide them with a healthy snack at the same time. Kids of all ages can have fun watching their celery stalks transform into colors they never imagined vegetables could be.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a tall glass halfway full of water and stir in 8 to 10 drops of food coloring. The darker the color, the more pronounced the color change will be.

    • 2

Wash the celery stalk and cut off the root end with a sharp knife. Be sure to leave the leafy top intact.

    • 3

Place the celery in the glass of colored water and set it aside, preferably back in the refrigerator if your kids will be snacking on it later.

    • 4

Monitor your celery stalks and watch the progress as the dyed water makes its way up the stem. For maximum color, leave overnight.

    • 5

Remove the celery stalks from the colored water and pat them dry with a paper towel. They can now be eaten, but keep in mind that it does contain food coloring, so it is possible that hands and mouths will be stained.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try dying one stalk two different colors. Slit a celery stalk lengthwise, but don't cut completely in half. Place each side in a different color of water and watch what happens.
