How to Do a 50-50 on a Snowboard

The 50-50 is a basic snowboarding trick you can do on just about any object. Since it's a grind, it works best on rainbow boxes, rails and other straight obstacles in the terrain park. If you've never done a grind before, the 50-50 is a bit harder than other boardslides, but it's not a bad trick to start with.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Approach the rail on your board so that it's facing the front side of your body. For example, if you ride with your right foot back, the rail should be downhill and to your right.
Step2
Move to the side and line the front of your board up with the front of the rail or box you're going to grind. If it's raised off of the ground, stay to the side of the object until you're next to it.
Step3
Ride over the end of the object with your board in its normal position. Keep your weight centered over the snowboard and slightly toward its tail end when you hit the rail.
Step4
Ride down the rail for a few feet or so. Continue facing to the side of the fall line or you'll transition from the 50-50 into a different kind of boardslide.
Step5
Hop off of the rail and land lightly on the snow. Bend your knees to absorb the drop's impact and control your snowboard.
Step6
Carve away from the rail or box so you don't inadvertently run into it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid leaning forward onto your toes or backward onto your heels during the 50-50. Keep your board centered over the rail, or you'll risk slipping off the object.
