How to Choose a Budgie

A budgie (short for Budgerigar) belongs to the Melopsittacus Undulatus species. Budgies make good household pets because they are sociable, small and don't require much maintenance. Although all birds are precious, there are things you need to consider in order to choose a good budgie.

Instructions

    • 1

Get your budgie from a reputable pet shop or bird breeder. The birds are already tamed used to human interaction. Take advantage of sites like BirdBreeders.com when selecting a breeder in your area. This site contains a Breeder Search feature and a rating system (see Resources below).

    • 2

Make sure you and your prospective friend are compatible. Not all birds are the same. Although they may have similar traits, birds have different personalities. Play with the budgie before adopting it to make sure that you like each other.

    • 3

Choose a hand-raised budgie, as they are more likely to talk. Keep in mind that not all budgies will talk, although they have the capability. Some will only whistle. It's easier to bond and train a single bird, as multiple budgies will bond with each other.

    • 4

Observe the bird you choose to make sure it's healthy, active and eating normally. The feathers should be bright and shiny. A healthy bird will be alert, lively and not easily frightened.

    • 5

Examine the budgie and make sure that it's not missing feathers. Bare patches could be a sign of disease

    • 6

Inquire about vaccinations. Reputable breeders and pet shops should have records of physical exams and vaccinations.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid purchasing birds that are puffed up or have a discharge, as these are signs of illness.
