How to Breakdance

Breakdancing is a challenging art form that requires a lot of physical stamina, balance, flexibility and rhythm. While it is an art form, it is closer in reality to a sport. Children who begin breakdancing at a young age can grow into the sport easier than those who are already grown. However, if you want to start at a later age, try a few of these tips to breakdance.

Instructions

    • 1

Get in shape. You must be physically fit to breakdance. Do treadmill or rowing machines in the gym, as well as floor exercises to strengthen your core. Crunches and weight lifting will help to build the taught muscles you need to control your movements on the floor when you breakdance.

    • 2

Start with some basic gymnastic moves such as standing on your head and doing somersaults on the floor. Do these moves at home when no one is looking.

    • 3

Drop to your hands about 12 inches from a wall and bring your feet up to the wall. When you somersault, keep going until you can roll to a standing position. Being proficient in these moves will serve you well in breakdancing.

    • 4

Take some online lessons so that you won't have to look silly when you breakdance in public. Get the basics down at home before you venture out. Try a few of the sites listed.

    • 5

Work with a partner when you begin to put all the gymnastics together to form a complete dance. You may need to get a little push when you try to turn on the ground. Having someone nearby to catch if you fall wrong, or to give you that last little push can help you to overcome some of the obstacles when you first begin breakdancing.
