How to Catch a Bat in Your House

It's definitely possible for bats to find your home and set up a colony in your attic. While bats are an important part of insect control (since bats eat insects), no one will think twice if you don't want bats in your house. Here's a safe way to get them out, without trying to catch them in a trap, bucket or towel.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Try not to get rid of bats in June, July or August if you want them safely removed. In the summer months, baby bats are too small to fly and won't leave the house. Spring is a great time to get the bats out since there are lots of insects outdoors.
Step2
Find out how the bats are getting in and out of your house. Watch your house at dusk and note the spots where the bats leave. Depending on the type of bat, you may find bats can get through holes that are as small as your thumb.
Step3
Put a bat house next to the holes where the bats are coming in and out. Some people will try to bait the house with insects.
Step4
Wait a few days.
Step5
Place a mesh cover over the holes during the day, sealing the holes closed on three sides. Leave one side open so the bats can escape the house but can't get back in.
Step6
Seal the holes once the bats are completely out.

Tips & Warnings

  • Contact a professional to get rid of bats if you want to ensure they are totally gone and won't return.
