How to Clear Foggy Headlight Covers
Foggy headlight covers have plagued cars since plastic replaced the old glass version. No amount of cleaning can prevent the inside of the headlight enclosure from fogging over time. Fortunately, there are methods for clearing the lights if you have the resources and comfort level to remove the covers from the car.

- Cardboard
- Fine cut plastic rubbing compound
- Microfiber or terrycloth towel

Remove the headlight covers from the car. Depending on the make and model you may have to remove corner lights, trim or even the bumper. Verify the method of removal in the manufactures manual before attempting to remove the enclosure.

Wet a piece of cardboard large enough to set the covers on but small enough to fit in the oven. Bake the covers for seven minutes at 200 degrees F while ensuring the cardboard remains wet. Check the sealant that holds the enclosure together and bake another 4 minutes if it remains hard.

Pry the covers apart carefully and set the housing aside. Let the sealant harden before continuing, as it tends to get on everything.

Place a quarter size dab of fine cut plastic rubbing compound on the fogged area of the cover. Work it carefully with a terry cloth or microfiber towel until it begins to squeak. Turn the towel over and remove any remaining polish to verify the entire cover is now clear.

Reassemble the headlights being sure to line up the plastic pieces and replacing any screws. Wet the cardboard again and place the covers into the oven at 200 degrees F for seven minutes.

Press the covers together as tightly as possible immediately after removal from the oven. Verify the seal bonded back together before installing the newly cleared covers into the car.
