The drop spin is an essential move in color guard. If you have seen a color guard in action, you have no doubt witnessed this breathtaking move. Learn how to drop spin a flag and marvel as the flag spins around and the silk catches its wind.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Flag
  1. Step 1

Hold the pole in the middle where the silk meets the pole. Put your right hand halfway up the pole in the middle of the silk. Make sure your thumb is facing upward as it will help to complete the rotation later.

  2. Step 2

Twist your right wrist so that the pole spins 180 degrees. The silk side should be pointing downward and the bare end should be in the air. Hold your left hand at your side so when it is needed you can effortlessly bring it to the pole and continue the drop spin.

  3. Step 3

Grab the pole with your left hand directly beneath your right hand. Now the knuckles of both hands should be facing opposite directions and your palms should be facing forward. Have a tight grip on the pole to avoid dropping it.

  4. Step 4

Release your right hand immediately. Swing your right hand to its side to keep it from being smacked by the spinning pole.

  5. Step 5

Spin the pole with your left hand so that the silk is on the upper half and the bare side of the pole is on the lower end. Bring your right hand back up to the pole above the left hand and repeat the movement.

Tips & Warnings
  • While this move requires a lot of hand changing it should not be a slow process. The pole should spin like a propeller in a fluid motion constantly. Practice this routine until you can easily switch hands and keep the speed constant.
