Step 1
Choose a string gauge according to your playing style. This is one of the most important ways to choose electric guitar strings. For a "crunching sound," you might want a heavier gauge. If you want to really bend the strings and create versatile sounds, you'll want a lighter gauge, but remember, you'll have to go easy on them as they break easier.
-
Step 2
Go with your "best brand." Sometimes you can make educated buys on brands of strings by what you've used before. Some musicians like Ernie Ball, others are partial to D-addario. Find the brand that works out best for you.
-
Step 3
Find a price range. You can buy a lot of different strings according to pricing. Some may play better than others. When buying strings, a lot of your choices might come down to philosophy: cheaper now, with more string buys later, or one quality purchase that will last.
-
Step 4
Select strings for your "image." Another price concern is whether you want to buy pricier strings as part of your image as a musician. Whether you are a minimalist when it comes to buying gear, or a real aficionado of quality strings, this will play into your purchasing choices.
-
Step 5
Take advantage of competitive pricing and bulk buys. You may end up buying strings based on what's on sale the week you visit the Guitar Center or Don Randall's. Bargain hunting applied to guitar gear is generally a good idea.
