How to Get Rid of Bad Smells in the Fridge

Your refrigerator may be one of the most difficult areas of your home to deodorize. Electrical failures, worn out parts that need replacing or just plain forgetting to dump those leftovers from last week may lead to a stinky problem. Cleaning and scrubbing may not do the trick, no matter what cleansers you use.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Get rid of bad smells in the fridge by using the time-tested method of baking soda. Add something extra, though, for tough odors: Put ½ cup of baking soda in a bowl. Add 1 to 2 tbsp. of vanilla extract and mix well. Place the bowl on the bottom shelf of your fridge. This usually works well within 2 days.
Step2
Try dry coffee grounds to get rid of bad smells in the fridge. Get two plates and pour enough coffee grounds on each plate to fill the plate nearly full. Place each plate on a different shelf in the fridge. You may also use shallow bowls, but the coffee grounds seem to absorb odor faster when spread on plates.
Step3
Buy ordinary charcoal that you use for grilling. Place a few pieces of charcoal in bowls. Place on each shelf of your fridge. Charcoal usually absorbs odors quickly and may work best for the toughest odor problems.
Step4
Place lemon or lime peels (or a combination of both) in bowls and place on each shelf to get rid of bad smells in your fridge. Citrus absorbs the bad smells and leaves a fresh, clean scent.
Step5
Put folded up newspapers inside your fridge to absorb odors. Replace the newspapers with fresh ones every couple of days until the odor is gone.

on 8/20/2008 well,i've tried to get the stench out after a power outage which happened during a vacation. Tried bicarb, lemon, charcoal but the smell seems to have stuck to the walls and racks. Any better ideas?
