Things You'll Need:
- Old pottery or chinaware
- Hammer
- Pattern
- Adhesive glue
- Pre-mixed grout
- Grout spreader
- Old towels
- Paper Towels
- Water container
- Safety glasses
- Sponge
- Masking tape
- Wooden tray
- Pencil or marker
-
Step 1
Take the pieces of pottery or chinaware and wrap the towel around them. Put your safety glasses on and use the hammer to break up the pottery into small pieces. On a covered table, separate the broken pieces by colors to make the design assembly easier. Choosing the right color scheme for the project is important
-
Step 2
Draw a pattern or design (of your choice) by tracing it or in free form style on the wooden tray with the pencil or marker. You can find pattern books online with complete instructions on drawing and transferring designs. You can also buy many of the supplies needed for this project online.
-
Step 3
Begin to layout the broken pieces on your drawn design. Set the pieces about 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch apart from one another. When satisfied with the look of the pieces arranged on the design, glue each piece with the adhesive onto the tray.
-
Step 4
Let the glue dry overnight. Prepare the tray for grouting by using the masking tape to tape along the inner side of the tray. This prevents grout from getting into these areas.
-
Step 5
Use the pre-mixed grout and gently press it into the sections between the pieces and over the entire design with the grout spreader. Be sure to work the grout evenly over the entire surface. Wait 20 minutes and allow the grout to set up.
-
Step 6
Wet the sponge in the water container and squeeze out any excess water. Wipe the tray surface to remove any excess grout. Rinse the sponge again and repeat the cleaning process if needed
-
Step 7
Allow the tray dry overnight and then use paper towels to polish the design on the tray. Remove the masking tape and you have your very own work of art. You can paint the outside of the tray if you wish with enamel paint but wait 24 hours before doing so. This project can help you feel creative as well as relaxed.
