How to Create a Movie Night

A great way to spend family time together that involves everyone is to create a movie night. You don't need to spend a lot of money and go out to the theater, either. You can create a movie night right at home. These nights can be a lot of fun and really give you the chance to spend quality time with your loved ones. Lights...camera...fun!

Instructions

    • 1

Schedule a movie night on a Friday or Saturday night. Allow the kids to stay up late. Start the movie at a specific time, just like a real theater.

    • 2

Set up snacks. Popcorn, candy and soda are staples at movie theaters. Get disposable cups with lids and straws for the soda and put popcorn (with butter, if desired) in bags to make it like a real movie experience. Even set up a "counter" and display the goodies for everyone to pick out what they want.

    • 3

Act as if you are at a movie theater. Have someone in charge of "selling" tickets (use small slips of paper). Rip the "tickets" and place in a box. Turn out all the lights in the room to make it seem like you're really at a theater.

    • 4

Create room to get comfortable. Move away any coffee tables and clear a space to set up pillows and blankets on the floor. Or, show the movie in the master bedroom and let everyone stretch out on the bed.

    • 5

Make movie night a tradition. Schedule it at least once a month. Allow a different person to pick the movie each time, or choose an adventure film the first time, a comedy the second, a horror film the third and so on, then repeat the cycle when all genres have been chosen.

Tips & Warnings

  • Pick two movies: one for grown-ups and one for kids. Watch the kiddie movie first, then put the kids to bed and watch the other movie.

  • Do movie themes when possible. For instance, watch scary movies around Halloween, holiday-themed movies around Christmas and war movies on Memorial Day weekend.

  • Have everyone get into their pajamas before the movie starts. That way, kids can simply be put to bed if they fall asleep before the movie ends.

  • Use a service like Netflix if you're going to schedule regular movie nights. For one low price, you can rent unlimited movies that are mailed directly to your home.
