How to Score and Fold a Box
There are several ways to create a custom box but a combination of the basic cube adapted as a container offers a closed complete box. Below are straightforward instructions on how to score and fold a paper box.

1
Draw six identical squares on a piece of paper in the shape of a traditional cross. This means four squares connected together in a vertical row down the center of the paper and 2 more squares out to the sides of the second square down. The size of the squares depends on the size of your paper and the size of box that you desire.
-
2
Cut out the paper cross and use glue to adhere it to the center of a piece of stiff card. You can of course draw your box template straight onto the card but the paper template makes things cleaner and gives a more finished look to the card box.

3
Draw tabs on the appropriate sides of the box squares making sure to create an extra large tab for the lid. The lid is the bottom vertical square in your cross so make sure you leave enough room on the card to make a large tab.
-
4
Score along the edges of the inner squares and between the tabs and the sides of the box. Score by holding a ruler along the edge and drawing down the line of the square with one blade of a pair of scissors. This makes your folds extremely clean and tight.
-
5
Cut out the box template and make sure all your scored lines are complete by attempting to fold the box up. Finish off any unscored edges before making a small slit in the side of the box where the box lid will go. Take care and use a sharp knife.
-
6
Fold the box edges along the edge of the squares, emphasizing each fold by pushing the flat side of a ruler along each one. Be sure to repeat the same procedure on the tabs.
-
7
Connect the sides of the box by folding in the tabs before folding the lid over the top and pushing the large tab into the slit on the top vertical square.
