Proper maintenance is the key to improving the lifespan of your clothes dryer. You can make your dryer last for 10 years or more. In addition, you will save money because your dryer will need fewer costly repairs. Follow these steps to take care of your clothes dryer.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Clean the lint filter after every load of clothes that you dry. Once per month, clean the lint filter with soap, water and a stiff brush to remove residue.

  2. Step 2

Remove lint from the vent hose in the back of the dryer at least once per month. In addition, remove lint from the spaces where the hose connects to your dryer and the wall with a long handled brush. Make sure that the dryer hose isn't crushed or bent further than a 90-degree angle. This will improve the flow of air through your dryer.

  3. Step 3

Remember that your dryer will last longer if it doesn't have to dry as many clothes. If you can hang items like blankets, sheets and towels to dry, you greatly reduce the amount of work your dryer has to do.

  4. Step 4

Use the highest spin cycle setting on your washing machine to get the maximum amount of moisture out of the clothing. Add a large dry towel to the load of clothes in the dryer to help them dry faster.

  5. Step 5

Keep items with rubber or plastic such as shoes out of your dryer. In addition, don't dry items that had any combustible product on them, such as oil or gasoline, even if you washed them.
