How to Ignore Someone

When you're trying to get work done in the office, the last thing you need is a co-worker constantly asking you about your lunch plans, talking loudly on the phone in the next office or updating you on employee gossip. Here's how to politely ignore someone that's pestering you so you can stay on task.

Instructions

    • 1

Listen to soft music on headphones if the person in the office or cubicle next door is constantly talking to other people, humming or tapping his pencil on the desk, for example. As a bonus, some co-workers may see you with the headphones and decide not to bother you.

    • 2

Pick up the phone immediately if you hear a bothersome co-worker approaching your office. Either pretend to be talking or make a real call to your significant other or trusted friend so the person won't interrupt you.

    • 3

Pretend you don't hear if someone starts bad mouthing another co-worker or griping about your boss. Either change the subject or make an excuse to leave the room. They'll eventually get the message that you don't have time for gossip or excessive complaining.

    • 4

Consider rearranging your office to face your desk away from the door. Co-workers are more likely to walk in and chitchat if they make eye contact with you.

    • 5

Keep your eyes on the speaker if someone sitting next to you in a meeting or conference is trying to talk to you about other matters. If they persist, tell them politely that you're trying to concentrate, but that you can talk to them once the speech or discussion is over.
