Getting the most out of your new HDTV seems as simple as plugging it in and turning it on. This is far from the truth due to the myriad of variables manufactures have built into the HDTV as well as all of the equipment that connects to it. Take a few minutes and make sure you are seeing the best HDTV has to offer.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Find the native resolution of your HDTV by checking the included documentation. 720p, 1080i and 1080p are the common resolutions and most HDTVs can receive all of the signals, however, sending it the native resolution often gives superior results.
Step2
Use the correct inputs on your HDTV. HDMI provides the best possible picture followed by component, S-video and composite. Use coax only if no other option is available.
Step3
Change the high definition cable, satellite and Hi-def disc players to output in the HDTV's native resolution. HDTV will scale all resolutions to the native resolution of the set. Feeding the HDTV its native resolution eliminates the artifacts and video noise introduced during scaling the signal a second time.
Step4
Test standard definition broadcasts and upscaling DVD players to determine if the HDTV or the source equipment does a better job upscaling the video. Turn off upscaling on the source box and visually verify which option provides the clearer, more vibrant picture.
Step5
Have the HDTV calibrated by a professional for best results. Manufactures settings often default to the blinding brightness and contrast levels required to look good in the bright lights of a showroom. Proper calibration can extend the life of your HDTV and the picture improvement is truly eye opening.
