Instructions

    • 1

Develop your professional skills by diversifying your resume. Go to school and get your high school diploma and college degree. The more experience you have, the better. Learn a new language or two to increase your chances of getting work at the UN. Travel as much as possible to understand the world better before trying to become part of the UN.

    • 2

Research what job vacancies the United Nations has available within your field by going to the UN's employment website. The left side of the page gives a category listing of what's available. Choose your occupational category and continue to the next page, which gives a listing of available jobs.

    • 3

Make sure your resume is up to date before posting it on the UN's website.

    • 4

Create a user account on the UN's website by clicking "Register as a user." Once you create your account, detail all of your professional experience on your personal history profile (PHP). After saving your PHP, start applying for any available positions.

    • 5

Make a list of questions to ask the hiring manager once your interview is scheduled. Be honest with your answers to their questions. Also expect to be taking various recruitment exams to see if you're right for the job. Depending on your test results, you could secure a P1, P2 or P3 position. P1 and P2 are lower-level positions while P3 is for more experienced individuals.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember that the United Nations has an age requirement along with professional requirements. You must be 32 years old to get certain low-level positions and 39 years old for higher-ranking ones.

  • Understand that the United Nations considers current UN staff members before others. But as long as you meet the UN's work eligibility requirements, you can move on to the next step of the hiring process without any problems.

  • Don't let the UN's age requirement keep you from applying. Start as a UN peace operative to prove your dependability. Go to the UN's website and select "Employment." Once you get to the page, click on "United Nations Peace Operations." The following screen shows you how to become a peace operative and what's required. Decide if this is the route you want to go to raise your profile until you reach the age requirement.
