Things You'll Need:
- 4 foot level
- 2 inch drywall screws
- L brackets
- 3/4 inch to 1 inch thick wood shelving
- 5/8 inch wood screws
-
Step 1
Find the studs in the wall on which you want to install the shelving. Mark the wall where the studs are.
-
Step 2
Decide where you want your shelves, how long and how far apart. If the objects that you'll place on the shelves are heavy, the brackets should be no more than 1 foot apart, and the shelves at least 1 inch thick. If the items are light, then you may place the bracket further apart, and the shelves can be only ¾ inch thick.
-
Step 3
Mark the holes where you will attach the brackets. Use a level to ensure your shelf will be straight. Screw the brackets for the first shelf into the wall and studs with 2-inch long drywall screws. Lay a long level on the top of the brackets to ensure they're level. If not, move one or more until they are.
-
Step 4
Place a shelf on the brackets, making sure that the board touches the wall. Screw 5/8 inch screws into the shelves through the holes in the brackets underneath the shelves.
-
Step 5
Repeat Steps 3 and 4 for the remaining shelves. Make sure there is enough space between shelves to store your things.
-
Step 6
Paint the shelves before installation to make them a bit more attractive or match any surrounding décor.
