How to Cut a Stub Tenon Joint
A stub tenon joint is a strong and sturdy joint that works very well. It does take a little time to prepare, but the results are well worth the effort.
Instructions
-
The Groove
-
1
Determine what the thickness of the tenon of the stub tenon will be, for this will determine the size of the groove when you cut a stub tenon joint.
-
2
Add a little extra to your measurement when you determine the depth of the groove. For example, if the length of your stub tenon is 9/32 of an inch, make the depth of the groove 1/32 of an inch. This will allow room for glue.

3
Prepare your table saw by installing a dado blade that's ¼ of an inch, and adjust it until its height is 9/32 of an inch. Make sure the rip fence of the table saw is secure, then attach a featherboard which will allow you to hold the wood you are cutting against the fence as you cut a stub tenon joint.
-
4
Cut the groove by taking one pass with your table saw as you cut the groove for the stub tenon joint.
The Stub Tenon Joint
-
5
Pick the same dado blade as you did to cut the groove when you cut the stub tenon joint.
-
6
Set up an auxiliary fence on your table saw that is ¼ of an inch from the table saw's blade when you cut a stub tenon joint.
-
7
Use the groove you have already cut to determine the tenon's thickness when you cut a stub tenon joint. Use this measurement to determine the height of the blade of your table saw.
-
8
Make sure that the miter gauge is 90 degrees to the table saw's rip fence. This will make sure tenon of the stub tenon is square when you cut a stub tenon.
-
9
Find a piece of scrap wood that is the same thickness of the final piece you will be cutting to see if you have set up the blade and the fence properly. Pass the wood through on one side, then flip it over to cut both sides of the stub tenon joint.
-
10
Fit the tenon into the groove. If the tenon fits, then you have set up your table saw properly. Cut the stub tenon joint from the piece of wood you will be using in your project.
-
11
Put glue on the stub tenon and also inside the groove and fit the two together. This is the final step in cutting a stub tenon joint.
