How to Care for Composite Countertops

Beautiful countertops are an asset to your home. They make your kitchen appealing and functional. However, to keep your composite countertops looking their best, you must clean and care for them well. If you don't have the manufacturer's directions, follow these steps to care for your composite countertops.

Things You’ll Need:

• Warm water, soapy water or composite countertop cleaner
• Sponge
• Clean towel
• Bleach solution
• Liquid abrasive cleanser
• Hot pad or trivet
• Cutting board

1. Clean your countertops with warm water, soapy water or a cleaner designed for composite countertops. After cleaning, wipe the surface dry with a clean towel.
2. Disinfect the countertop with a solution of one part bleach to one part water. Spray a light mist on the counter, rinse thoroughly and dry with a towel.
3. Remove small scratches in the countertop with a small amount of liquid abrasive cleanser on a sponge. Buff the scratch lightly, rinse and dry.
4. Wipe up spills and clean the countertop immediately as described in Step 1 because composite countertops will stain. Take extra care not to spill foods or drinks that stain quickly, such as wine and grape juice.
5. Keep damaging items away from your composite countertop. Hot pots and pans placed directly on the countertop will cause damage. Use a hot pad or trivet to protect the surface. Keep harsh chemicals away from the countertop. Always use a cutting board when you need to chop food.
6. Remember that as with most natural surfaces, sunlight can affect these countertops, causing them to fade. Therefore, try not to let direct sunlight shine on them for long periods. You can restore the surface by lightly sanding with sandpaper and sealing, should damage occur.
