How to Replace a Vacuum Cleaner Drive Belt
The cleaning head for a vacuum cleaner runs on a rubber drive belt. Unfortunately, these belts have a way of breaking at the most inopportune time. Luckily the drive belt is easy to replace on most models of vacuum cleaners. You can switch out the bad belt for the new one in a matter of minutes. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Purchase the correct drive belt. The owner's manual of the vacuum cleaner can provide that information for you. The model number of the vacuum should also be on the vacuum cleaner so you can purchase the drive belt with that information as well.
-
2
Keep a supply of vacuum cleaner drive belts on hand. Most belts come with two or three belts in a package, so remember where you store the opened package for when you need to replace the drive belt the next time.

3
Unplug the vacuum cleaner from the electrical source. Turn the cleaning head over so that you can access the plate that covers the carpet beater bars.
-
4
Unscrew the plate. On some vacuum models, the plate snaps off. At this point you should be able to see the broken drive belt along with the two drive bars.
-
5
Remove any debris from the vacuum head. Untangle any long threads wrapped around the beater bar. These only put more strain on a drive belt, so keep this area of your vacuum clean.
-
6
Slip the new drive belt on the beater bar. Connect it with the drive shaft. You may need to use the screwdriver to stretch the belt enough to get it over the two shafts.
-
7
Make sure the beater bar turns freely with the new drive belt attached. Put the plate back over the beater bars. Snap or screw it into place.
