As summer comes around, you may start to think about planning a barbeque in your backyard. However, many outdoor barbeques increase your carbon footprint by creating a lot of waste and using up natural resources. To stay environmentally conscious, throw a green barbeque.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Turn off all of the electric appliances in your home. Since grilling with gas or charcoal uses less energy than electric appliances, don't use your stove, oven or microwave.

  2. Step 2

Skip the plastic. You create unnecessary waste by serving food with plastic plates and utensils. Instead use washable plates and utensils. Same goes for napkins. If you do want disposable options, pick biodegradable and recycled plates and napkins, like the type from Whole Foods.

  3. Step 3

Pick organic and local food to serve at your barbeque. Go to a local farmer's market and pick up organic meats, fruits and vegetables for your cookout. You can also serve wild caught fish at a green barbeque. If you're buying from a supermarket, look for a label that certifies the food as organic.

  4. Step 4

Use natural insect repellents during your green barbeque. Light citronella candles to keep bugs away from your guests. Avoid using any repellents that contain the pesticide DEET.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember to prepare just enough food for your guests. When throwing a green barbeque, you don't want to have leftovers that end up in the trash. If possible, make use of your compost heap.
