Things You'll Need:
- Rags
- Screw driver
- Oil container with drip spout
- Bicycle chain lubricant
-
Step 1
Flip the bicycle upside down. Balance the bicycle on the handle bars and seat, or prop the upside down bicycle against a wall.
-
Step 2
Remove any dried-on mud with a dry scrubbing brush. Use a narrow flat head screwdriver to chip away any mud that has dried on the inside of the chain links. Wipe the chain with a dry cloth after removing the mud.
-
Step 3
Apply the oil, such as Dumonde Tech Bicycle Chain Lube, to the inner part of the chain, beginning on the lower rung.
-
Step 4
Mark the starting section of the chain with a sharpie marker so that you will know when lube has been applied to the entire chain.
-
Step 5
Hold a rag under the portion of the chain that you will apply the lubricant to. Use a container that has a drip spout to apply the oil. Add one to two drops of oil to each link in the chain.
-
Step 6
Rotate the pedals slowly to move the chain so that the portion of the chain that was on the top is now on the bottom and ready to have the lube applied. Apply the lube to this section in the same manner. Stop lubricating the chain once you get to the link that has been marked with the permanent marker.
-
Step 7
Rotate the chain a couple of times by turning the pedals with your hands. Wipe up any excess oil from the chain with a clean cloth. Turn the bicycle right side up, and ride away.
