The bible is a long and highly complex book. Fortunately, it can be simple to navigate thanks to its system of books, chapters and verses that make it easy to find any passage. Once you know how the system works, you can look up any bible verse in a few minutes. There are also new and even easier ways to look up Bible verses on the Internet.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Learn how the bible is set up. The Bible is divided into many different books, usually named after their author or authors. The actual books vary somewhat depending on the version of the Bible. Most books are divided into chapters, which are then divided into verses.

  2. Step 2

Determine the right book of the Bible to begin to look up the verse. The book of the Bible is the first thing listed in proper verse notation. For example, the famous Bible verse John 3:16 is located in the book of John.

  3. Step 3

Find the book. Open the Bible and look for the table of contents, which is usually located near the front of the book. Find the book you want from the list, and turn to the appropriate page number.

  4. Step 4

Look for the chapter. Next, you'll need to look for the first number in the Bible verse notation that indicates the chapter. John 3:16 is located in chapter three. The chapters are noted in bold print within the text of the book.

  5. Step 5

Locate the verse. Look at the last number in the bible verse notation. John 3:16 is located in the book of John, chapter three and verse 16. The verse is indicated by small numbers before the beginning of the verse.

  6. Step 6

Use the Internet to look up bible verses. Go to the BibleGateway website, and choose the version of the Bible you want to use from the drop-down menu. Then, in the text box, enter the verse in proper Bible verse notation, and click the "search the bible" button.
