Step 1
Release your expectations of what your youth group should look like, the size it should be and how the kids should behave. Accept them for where they are in their individual walks.
-
Step 2
Pray about the direction the group should take. A successful ministry is led by God, not by you.
-
Step 3
Find other youth leaders who are committed to being a part of the youth group for at least a year. High turn over in your ministry causes the kids to become distrustful and is counter-productive. Take the time to recruit and interview at least two or three other leaders whose relationship with God is solid and who relate well to the youth.
-
Step 4
Get to know the kids through quality time. This often comes in the form of small groups or break-out sessions where, over time, kids can open up and start sharing. Set a standard for yourself to know the kids well and be vulnerable enough that they feel they know you.
-
Step 5
Focus the group on knowing God. Many youth groups are just about having fun and are more like child-sitting services than a youth group. Remember, the focus isn't entertaining the youth but getting them to grow in their relationship with Christ.
-
Step 6
Remember that you're in charge. When push comes to shove, and it will, keep in mind that kids frequently test the limits and push adults to find out what you're made of. Stand firm and be the leader they need.
