1
Do whatever it takes to find out who you are at the core of your being and what really matters to you in life. You should be able to tell others where you see yourself in five years, what your longer-term goals are and your strengths and weaknesses.
-
2
Write down the five to seven most important character qualities you're looking for in a girl, and then work on having those qualities yourself. A healthy relationship isn't one that completes you, but one that complements you. People are most often attracted to others who are like themselves.

Ask a lot of proactive questions of the girl you're dating. Find out about her background and family, her pet peeves, her habits, what makes her angry and what pleases her. As you learn who she is, you'll be able to see if she's a good match.

Listen to your gut. Many times people get involved too quickly out of loneliness or in order to fill a void in their lives and forget to really take seriously what that "inner voice" is saying. On the other hand, it's important to know the difference between "commitment issues" and "she's not the one." If you've done the work in Step 1, you should be tuned in to what your inner voice is saying.

Tips & Warnings
You can avoid getting involved too quickly by choosing to wait to have sex. Sex, casual or committed, bonds you to a person. Science has proven that a drug released during sex causes a bond between the two people. Once you have crossed that line, it's very difficult to evaluate rationally whether she's the one for you.
