The knit stitch is one of the first stitches a beginner knitter learns. The knit stitch is also the most common stitch you'll use in knitting regardless of the pattern you're making. Read on to learn how to knit the knit stitch.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Cast on the first row of knitted loops onto your needles. This row that is cast on should have the number of loops on your needle that your pattern requires.

  2. Step 2

Hold the needle with the stitches on it in your left hand and hold the empty needle in your right hand. Insert the right needle through the first stitch on the left needle moving it from the front of the stitch to the back.

  3. Step 3

Bring the yarn from the left side over the top of the right needle. This will create a loop on your right needle. Use your right hand to move the yarn while securely holding both needles with your left hand.

  4. Step 4

Separate the two needles. Pull the right needle with the loop on it through the stitch on the left needle.

  5. Step 5

Pull the needles further apart until the new stitch is on the right needle. This is your first stitch. Continue Steps 2 through 4 for the remainder of the row until all of the stitches are on the right needle.

  6. Step 6

Turn the right needle around and move it to your left hand once you complete the row. This allows you to continue knitting stitches. Continue knitting rows until you have finished your pattern.

Tips & Warnings
  • To cast on a row of yarn, see the related eHow article "How to do the Two Needled Cable Cast On." http://www.ehow.com/how_2295048_do-two-needle-cabled-cast.html
  • Keep your stitches firm but not too tight. Too tight and it'll be difficult to move them to the right needle. Too loose and the garment your knitting will have large gaps in it.
