Fitting a double din head unit into many cars seems like an impossible job. Roadsters in particular are lacking additional space to add stereo accessories such as LED screens. Using the open area of your dash is a great solution that maximizes the space you have and adds a custom flare to your special ride. Read on to learn how to install a car stereo head unit.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Head unit or LCD screen
  • Mounting cage
  • Bezel
  • Masking tape
  • Marker
  • Razor knife
  • Saws

Step1
Open up the dash from below and look for any wires, cross members or supports that may be in the way. Move any objects that you do not want to sever while opening the hole in the dash to place your new stereo head unit or LCD screen.
Step2
Cover the area you're going to cut with masking tape and pay attention to the edge of the airbag assembly. Use a marker to create a rough outline of the cut you'll be making by tracing the inside edge of the bezel.
Step3
Use a razor knife to begin cutting out the dash. It will come out in layers and may require shallow saws--all to cut through the final portion of dash. Use the razor knife to smooth out and straighten the edges carefully to ensure the opening doesn't get too large.
Step4
Check that your wiring is long enough to reach the new unit without bending or crimping severely.
Step5
Secure the mounting cage to the edges of the opening and set the car stereo unit into place after making all of the required connections. Tighten down any loose bolts on the mount and test the unit to verify all wire connections are working.
Step6
Fasten the bezel into place and clean up the dash. You're ready to use your new system that looks as good as it sounds.

Tips & Warnings

  • Cutting into your dash can't be undone and replacement parts are expensive.
