Step 1
Note what type or types of cable you need a crimper or stripper for. For example, is the cable RJ10/R22, RJ11, RJ12 or RJ45? Is the cable flat or round? Not all crimpers and strippers work on all types of configurations of cable, so if the project calls for stripping and crimping an RJ45, you must purchase a crimper/stripper tool that specifically states on the packaging that it crimps and strips RJ45 cable. The packaging must also state that the tool cuts and strips flat cables, round cables or both.
-
Step 2
Insist on a crimper/stripper with a built-in stop incorporated into the stripping function. A stop takes all the guess work out of the cuts needed for cable stripping and ensures a correct strip length every time.
-
Step 3
Select a crimper/stripper with a built-in crimp hammer for setting the cable wires into the cable connectors. This way you don't need a separate tool.
-
Step 4
Examine the handles of any crimper/stripper before you buy it to ensure it is made of steel under the padding or coating. Setting cables requires a good deal of force. Weak or cheaply made handles ensure a crimper has a short life because they break or bend and apply uneven force during the crimping process.
-
Step 5
Buy crimper/strippers with a ratcheting feature. It's easier on the hands and crimping requires much less force. Crimper/strippers with ratcheting action may be a little more expensive but your hands will thank you.
