Step 1
Understand the basic sounds of the drums. They set the tone for the rest of the music and instruments involved. Once you have mastered keeping a basic beat, you can move on to beats requiring multiple moves and a combination of drums.
-
Step 2
Practice how the normal drum pattern feels between the bass and snare drums. Using the regular 12/8 patter, you would play the bass drum on one and three and the snare drum on two and four. Practice this through a few times to make sure you have the timing down. As you well know, drums are all about timing.
-
Step 3
Use the basic pattern for the half-time shuffle drum beats. In the basic pattern, you are playing the top of the closed high hat on every beat, the bass with every second beat and the snare with every fifth beat. You can vary and modify this to fit your particular music genre or preferences.

Step 4
Expand on the basics. You can add different patterns or ghost notes to add depth and dimension to the shuffle pattern. Ghost notes are especially popular and bring a different level altogether to the drum beat sounds.
