An Ebow is a small handheld device that vibrates your guitar strings as you play to create a number of unique sound effects. Used by such rock heavyweights as Tom Petty, Queen, Collective Soul, the Ebow is small, lightweight and runs on a battery, making it a snap to use.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Experiment with Ebow placement on your guitar. While most players prefer the tone that comes from the Ebow when placed near the bridge pickup, you can get different tones and volumes by changing the position of the bow. You may find that some songs are better played with the Ebow over the pickup while others sound better with the Ebow a bit further from the pickup.

  2. Step 2

Turn down the tone knob on your electric guitar or amplifier when using an Ebow, as the vibrations can cause a high pitched shrill. Again, depending on the Ebow placement, your type of guitar and/or amplifier, your will have to play with the tone knobs to get just the right sound for your needs.

  3. Step 3

Place the Ebow on the second or third bass strings of your guitar for best effects, as placing the Ebow on the higher strings can cause distortion and high pitched noises. While the Ebow is only designed to rest on a single string, the vibration carries over to the surrounding strings as well.

  4. Step 4

Practice with your Ebow until you can use it like a pick, strumming strings individually for an arpeggio sound, move the bow in and out for the effect of a wah-wah peddle or slide the Ebow up and down the strings to get the sound of a bottle slide. The Ebow can be a bit awkward at first, but with practice you can get many interesting and unique sounds.
