How to Block Spammers on Twitter
Twitter is a useful tool for social networking. Like most social networking tools, however, Twitter is susceptible to spammers who get you to follow them and then only send frequent updates (also known as "tweets") promoting their product. While you can't prevent this from happening altogether, there are some things you can do to block spammers on Twitter.

1
Use the Twitter Twerp Scan web page to calculate the ratio of friends to followers among your fans. Users that follow many people but have few followers are more likely to be spammers. This isn't always the case, of course, but it is one sign to watch.

2
Observe the potential spammer's tweets. If her tweets are frequent, not conversational and always contain a link, she is probably a spammer.

Tips & Warnings
Twitter attempts to blacklist spammers. If you identify a spammer, consider reporting them to Twitter.
If you use one of the many applications based on the Twitter API, such as Twhirl, the application may have a way to block spammers on Twitter, as well. Check the application's documentation for instructions.
Don't use an automatic reciprocal following program on Twitter. These programs attract spammers because they know you will automatically follow them if they follow you first.
