Whether you are adding a wall to an existing patio or putting up a wall as you build a patio, the technique to set the blocks is basically the same. Start with a good solid base and in no time you can enjoy walls around your patio.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Measure the space where you want to build the patio wall. Mark the space with a string tied to stakes or a plumb line.

  2. Step 2

Set the first row, or course, of wall blocks in place. Figure out what pattern, if any, you plan to use. Use a shovel to mark the edges of the blocks.

  3. Step 3

Remove the blocks. Dig out about 4 to 6 inches of dirt and sod from the area you marked.

  4. Step 4

Pour pea gravel or small rocks into the trench you dug in Step 3. Tamp the rocks into place. Check that the surface is level.

  5. Step 5

Start at one corner. Set the corner block in place. Set three blocks in each direction from the corner. Now set the corner block for the second course. Make sure all the blocks are level at this point.

  6. Step 6

Continue to set the blocks for the first and second course of blocks. Arrange the blocks so that the ends are staggered for each course. Check periodically to make sure the courses remain level.

  7. Step 7

Build the wall to the desired height. It may be necessary for you to run metal posts in the holes in the blocks to insure that the blocks remain straight and true. Finish the patio wall with a top course of finishing blocks.
