Transform a pair of shorts into a skirt with a few easy steps and basic sewing skills. This is a great way to give new life to an item of clothing that you might otherwise no longer wear. Make sure to use shorts that fit you well so that your finished skirt looks great on you.
Things You'll Need
- Seam ripper
- Straight pins
- Measuring tape
- Sewing machine
Rip the inseam of each leg of the shorts through to the crotch using the seam ripper. Continue up the rear of the shorts until the shorts are completely open and the material is straight and flat. Finish by ripping the front seam to the bottom of the zipper or fly area of the front of the shorts.
Lay your opened shorts on a table or flat surface. Cut the bottoms of the front and back so they are even. Pin the vertical seams together to create the front and back of your skirt.
Use a piece of chalk and measuring tape to draw an even line on the bottom edge for the hem. Pin the hem along the line. Try on the skirt to see if you are happy with the length. Adjust the length to your comfort level.
Fold the hem twice, covering the unfinished edge of your skirt, before pinning it at the desired length. This will give it a finished edge when you sew it.
Thread your sewing machine with an appropriately colored spool and bobbin. Place your skirt in your sewing machine and stitch along the pinned lines.
Trim any excess threads.
Tips & Warnings
