Tow trucks, also known as wreckers or recovery trucks, haul non-drivable cars and trucks to repair garages, salvage yards and impound stations. Most tow companies charge a transportation fee as well as a holding fee, if the vehicle needs to stay at the tow company's lot. Although there are various styles of tow trucks and add-on features to increase versatility, the buying process is generally the same.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Review Autotrader, Craigslist and Lynch Truck Center. These sites allow you to compare models and price. Check repair shops, used vehicle lots and newspaper ads for tow trucks made within the last 5 years that have low mileage.

  2. Step 2

Select one or two tow trucks that vary slightly in style but are within your price range. Decide what kind of cab chassis and truck body you need.

  3. Step 3

Contact the previous owners and ask them about the tow truck's performance and their reason for selling. If you're still interested in the vehicle, ask the seller if you can take the truck to a mechanic who specializes in commercial trucks. Have the mechanic check the truck for mechanical and safety problems, durability and hauling capabilities.

  4. Step 4

Ask the seller for an opportunity to test the tow truck. Hook up a standard vehicle to the tow truck and drive a short distance to test its maneuverability and hauling capabilities.

  5. Step 5

Compare performance, negotiate a price with the seller and buy the tow truck that best suits your needs.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never pay the asking price of a new or used tow truck.
