Things You'll Need:
- Monistat 7
- Gentian Violet
- Lotrimin AF
-
Step 1
Identify the pain. Is it burning or just pinching?
-
Step 2
If it is pinching then baby needs to be repositioned. Baby's mouth should cover all of the bottom of the areola and have just a bit peeking from the top. Note: Breastfeeding should NOT hurt after the first week or so. If it is burning then move on to the next symptom.
-
Step 3
1. Burning
2. Itching... with my Thrush it literally itched and hurt after I'd get done feeding my baby. This was after at least three days of the burning when latching her on. -
Step 4
1.Burning
2.Itching
3. Deep Breast Pain....This is a sensation as though the nipple is painfully hard when in fact its not. The pain starts from the center of the nipple and shoots straight back. This occurs within the first week of onset of symptoms. -
Step 5
1. Burning
2.Itching
3.Deep Breast Pain
The visual of the nipple will be light pink with a shiny surface. A rash may even be present. -
Step 6
Of course as with anything medical seek your doctors opinion.
I have had Thrush with two of my three children, all of whom I breastfed. I know what to look for.
For home treatment I recommend using one of the following:
1. Monistat 7...YES the vaginal cream!!! Rub onto nipples AFTER each feeding. Place a clean breastpad over the area. WASH OFF BEFORE FEEDING BABY!!!!
2.Lotrimin AF can also be used ....YES the foot cream!!! SAME INSTRUCTIONS AS BEFORE. WASH OFF BEFORE FEEDING!!!!! Cream treatments should be used for 14days.
3.Gentian Violet. With this you must get it from the pharmacy( no prescription required) Take a Q-Tip and coat nipples. This stuff DOES stain so use carefully. It is OK to feed baby with the dye on your nipples. -
Step 7
Thrush will usually clear up on its own after about 2 weeks. If treatments are not working seek a doctors advice. Take your baby in to see their pediatrician to see if Thrush is present in his/her mouth. THere will usually be while patches inside their mouth. It is NORMAL to see a few white tiny specks. Those are normal just like the little pimples they get on their faces.
