Step 1
Start socializing young. As soon as you bring your puppy home develop a plan to socialize your pup. Puppy class, the beach, hiking in the woods, a walk around the city are all good places to socialize.
-
Step 2
One of the best ways to socialize your puppy is a positive, fun puppy class that allows the puppies to play. A good puppy class will start your puppy on obedience and stop behavior problems from starting.
-
Step 3
All new interactions should be as positive as possible. When your dog meets a new person, have them give your dog a treat and spend a few minutes playing with your dog. Ask the person to NOT encourage bad behavior such as jumping and biting.
-
Step 4
Socializing with other dogs is also good to do. Make sure you know the other dogs your puppy will be interacting with before they meet. It's good to let your puppy play with other puppies her own age. By interacting and playing with puppies her own age, your puppy will be much more stable around other dogs as an adult.
-
Step 5
Bringing your puppy to your veterinarian and groomer is also a good idea. Bring your puppy when you don't have an appointment. Call first and ask if you can stop in for a few minutes just to make a positive association. When you arrive, give your dog a few treats, keep things light and fun, and then go back to your car.
