Step 1
A good handKnow when to hold 'em know when to fold 'em. It is a famous line from a Kenny Rogers. After researching what the experts do, many agree that amateurs play too many hands. It is a common mistake for newbies. Realize that not every hand is or can be a winner, so don't be afraid to fold.
-
Step 2
Doyle Brunson - Poker Legend and WSOP championJust because Moneymaker pulled a bluff doesn't mean you have to or should. In the games I have played I have seen guys bluff just for bluffing sake which makes no sense. You have to know your opponent. A lot of opponents will call every time and it makes no sense to try and bluff them.
-
Step 3
This hand you would not foldThere is a saying in business that if it isn't working you must put it out to pasture and what that means is if the business clearly isn't going anywhere it makes no sense to dump money into it. The same holds true for poker. Just because you are in doesn't mean you have to stay in. If the cards don't fall your way, fold your hand, take the loss and live to play another hand.
-
Step 4
Bank RollPlay within your means and not above it. Gambler' s anonymous has a quote that says bet with your head and not above it. That holds true in poker. Regardless of where you play, only play if you can afford the bank roll required to stay in the game. If you have no bank roll then play online for free. If you have a low bank roll then play with some friends. You get the point.
-
Step 5
Pay Attention to what others are doing. The best poker players are great not because they are lucky and get the cards, but they know how to read people and understand the patterns of how they play. This takes time to understand others, but if you play enough hands you can get to know the people around you and how they play.
