Potty training can be one of the easiest thing to teach your child if you do it early and do it right. Here are a few great tips on potty training your little one!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Potty or child size toilet seat.
  • Determination
  • Encouragement
  • Patience
  1. Step 1

Before you get started, be sure that your child knows what it means to go "pee" or "poop." If they can't explain to you what they what they are doing, they may not be ready for training, which of course, makes the experience harder than it should be.

  2. Step 2

Once there is a mutual understanding of the type of business we all take part in, give them a tour of Mr. Toilet. Explain all the parts, how they work, and explain to them that it's where all of our "business" goes.

  3. Step 3

Now, instead of pushing your child to sit on the toilet seat, start by having them run to the bathroom when they need to go. It doesn't matter if they're still going in their diaper. As long as they are in the same room as the toilet, they will start to make the connection that there is room for what they are doing. When you see your child getting ready to relieve himself, carry him into the bathroom.

  4. Step 4

After your child has mastered the concept of what goes on in the bathroom, you can try sitting him down on the toilet seat a few times a day. Sit with them for a few minutes just to get them to get used to this new practice. For our son, it took only 3 tries of sitting him down on his potty before he went! Remember not to force them. The more nervous they get, the less likely they are to succeed.

  5. Step 5

Keep this up for a few days and remember that they need positive reinforcement!

Tips & Warnings
  • You can help them keep track of how well they are going by giving them stickers to place on a progress chart. Children will be more encouraged when they can see their noted success.
  • Don't worry about the wiping issue. They may still need help with that. Just get the potty training down and all the other things will be easier to teach.
  • Do make sure that they wash their hands after they sit on the potty regardless of whether they relieved themselves. It's a good habit to teach.
