How to Make Healthier Sweet Tea

There's no doubt about it--sweet tea is tasty. But with all that sugar, it's not very good for you. Here is my recipe for a healthier sweet tea using stevia, a naturally sweet herb and flavor enhancer.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • 4 green or black tea bags (you can also try white tea)
  • 8 cups boiling water
  • 1 tsp. stevia
  • A large pitcher
  • Mint leaves for garnish

Step1
To start, place the tea bags in the pitcher and add the boiling water. Let it stand for around 15 minutes and then take the tea bags out and discard.
Step2
Add the stevia and stir gently. Add the fresh mint leaves to garnish.
Step3
Let the tea sit on the counter until it has cooled down or until it's at least warm. At this point you can pour it over ice in individual glasses or refrigerate it to enjoy later.
Step4
If you like it sweeter, add more stevia. It's best to do it once you serve the tea so you can add it a drop at a time. Be careful not to add too much because stevia is quite sweet.

Tips & Warnings

  • Although black tea is good for you, it seems as if green tea is a little bit better in terms of enhancing your health. And since they're the same plant, black and green teas do share some health benefits.
  • Make sure you aren't allergic to stevia.

on 7/20/2008 Thanks! Yes, sweet tea has a ridiculous amount of sugar and it's so bad for you! I like it but don't normally drink it because of all the sugar. So, I came up with an alternative.

on 7/9/2008 My boyfriend is from the south, so he drinks a whole lot of sweet tea, but it seems like he uses a few pounds of sugar a week between sweet tea and coffee. It's not only bad for you because of the calories, it also can mess with your digestive system. I'm definitely trying out this recipe!
