How to Improve Basketball Handling With Ball Wraps

Ball Handling is an essential skill for every basketball player. This article focuses on a drill that can improve your ball handling: "Ball Wraps." This drill provides great training for ball awareness and control.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Basketball
  1. Step 1

    Hold the ball firmly at your forehead.

  2. Step 2

    Take the ball in your right hand and move it clockwise to the back of your head.

  3. Step 3

    Move your left hand to the back of your head to grab the ball.

  4. Step 4

    Bring the ball around with your left hand to the starting point at your forehead. You should be in the exact position as Step 1.

  5. Step 5

    Do two more repetitions clockwise around your head.

  6. Step 6

    Position the ball in front of your belly button.

  7. Step 7

    Take the ball in your right hand and move it clockwise to your lower back.

  8. Step 8

    Move your left hand to your lower back to grab the ball.

  9. Step 9

    Bring the ball around with your left hand to the starting point at your belly button. You should be in the exact position as Step 6.

  10. Step 10

    Do two more repetitions around your waist.

  11. Step 11

    Put your legs together.

  12. Step 12

    Position the ball in front of your knees.

  13. Step 13

    Take the ball in your right hand and move it clockwise until you get it behind your knees.

  14. Step 14

    Move your left hand to your lower to grab the ball.

  15. Step 15

    Bring the ball around with your left hand to the starting point in front of your knees. You should be in the exact position as Step 12.

  16. Step 16

    Do two more repetitions around your knees.

  17. Step 17

    Staying at the knees, repeat the process moving the ball counter-clockwise three repetitions--then counter-clockwise around the waist three repetitions--finally, counter-clockwise at the head three repetitions.

  18. Step 18

    Continue alternating clockwise and counter-clockwise for 60 seconds.

Tips & Warnings
  • For beginners, it is OK to watch the ball as you perform the drill. As you advance, keep your eyes up to build confidence in your feel for the ball.
  • Start slowly, then increase your speed as you become more proficient at the drill.
  • When doing the wraps around the knees, be sure to bend at the knees instead of bending at the waist.
