If you are not careful and do not know what to spot it is very possible that you will encounter an attempted fraudulent transaction on Ebay. Read on to learn tips on avoiding a frustrating loss of money or possession.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

When someone asks a question about your item for sale, when you answer be sure to mark your email as hidden.

  2. Step 2

Be suspicious of potential buyers who offer you more money than you requested. If you have a 'Buy It Now' item for $150 and someone writes saying they would be interested in purchasing your item for $250, chances are this is not a credible offer.

  3. Step 3

Be wary of items that, after purchase, are to be mailed to a different address, usually in a different country than the address of the person that purchased it. Usually there are stories to accompany this, as in it is a gift to a cousin who is abroad. Be wary.

  4. Step 4

To protect yourself, use a different email address for Paypal than you do for Ebay. If you do allow the purchaser to have a copy of your email address and you begin recieving mail from Paypal saying there are funds to be credited to your account sent to the same email as your Ebay email, you know this is fraudulent.

  5. Step 5

If you recieve mail from Paypal that tells you you're funds are waiting and will be credited to your account after you send the shipping number, do not mail your item. Notice in cases like these, although the email appears to be from Paypal, if you try to respond to it, it is from an email address that does not end in paypal.com. Also note that when you access your account at Paypal there will be no information reguarding pending deposits. If you are unsure, contact Paypal before you take action.

  6. Step 6

Report abuse of the aution site to Ebay so that they can continue to provide a service with the utmost protection to its users.

  7. Step 7

Simply because a buyer marks your item as paid for via Ebay does not mean that it has been. Be wary and smart and be sure to research suspicious bids and report them accordingly.

Tips & Warnings
  • When in doubt, contact Ebay or Paypal before taking action.
