I have personally seen the healthy benefits of switching to a diet of fresh, whole foods. I adopted a child with hypothyroidism, celiac’s disease, and reflux disease. After 2 years of eating a healthier diet, he no longer suffers from any of these ailments. If the majority of your food comes in a package, it may be time to detox your diet.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Avoid packaged, processed foods and refined grains and sugars. Choose whole grains, which are brown, not white. Choose natural sweeteners such as honey, stevia or molasses. If you must eat sugar, eat organic unrefined sugar which is also brown, not white. Do not eat artificial sweeteners, they are a health risk.

  2. Step 2

Choose fresh, whole fruits and vegetables as often as possible. Raw fruits and vegetable are not only packed with nutrients, they contain live enzymes that aid in digestion. Freezing and cooking destroys enzymes and nutrients in foods that can be beneficial to your body. Whenever possible, eat fresh raw fruits and vegetables.

  3. Step 3

Eat meat that is organic and free-ranged. Try to limit the amount of red meat you eat and focus on chicken, fish, eggs, nuts and beans for protein instead. Beans are an amazing source of protein and are naturally low in fat.

  4. Step 4

Filter your water. If you aren’t filtering your water, your body is the filter. Most municipal water supplies contain low amounts of lead from household plumbing. No amount of lead is safe. You can buy inexpensive water filters, including brands such as Brita and Pur, that will filter lead and common contaminants out of your water for less than the cost of bottled drinking water. Also, most municipalities publish an annual water quality report. It is always advisable to see what contaminants are in your water, before you purchase a water filter.

  5. Step 5

Organic food is always healthier because it does not contain pesticides, genetically modified organisms (GMO’s), cloned animals, a large number of food additives and is free of irradiation. However, organic food is also more expensive. If you are on a budget it is important to know which foods are the most beneficial to eat organically. See my article listed below, “Eating Organic on a Budget.”
