If you are looking for ways to save on energy costs as well as be more "environmentall correct", here are some tips tho help when it comes to heating your water.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Lower the thermostat on your water heater. Most come pre-set to a high temperature. Reduce that temperature to save on heating costs. 120 degrees Fahrenheit is the recommended comfort level.

  2. Step 2

Take showers not baths. Sure baths are more relaxing however they use a lot more water in turn requiring to heat a lot more water.

  3. Step 3

Insulate your hot water heater. They sell insulating wraps at your local home center. Pick the size that matches your water heater and follow the instructions. You will need to away the portion of the insulation that covers the thermostat. If you do not do this your water heater will not regulate properly.

  4. Step 4

Get a professional (or if you are handy yourself) to install heat traps on the hot and cold pipes at your water heater to prevent heat loss. Some newer water heaters already come with them.

  5. Step 5

The federal department of energy recommend that you drain a quart of water from your tank every 3 months to remove sediment that impedes heat transfer.
