The new Apple iPhone 3G will be available July 11, 2008 and uses the fast 3G wireless technology that's the standard for all wireless data services. You must remember that the iPhone 3G will still only work on the ATT wireless network. Before going out and buying one of these phones, you will need to research coverage areas for voice and 3G data.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go to att.com and select shop for plans.

  2. Step 2

On the next page enter your zip code into coverage viewer. *Note- any other places you plan on using your iPhone 3G you will have to enter the zip code for those areas as well.

  3. Step 3

On the coverage map be sure you have the Coverage Type selected that you are interested in. For voice coverage check out the Voice Coverage Legend below the map to make sure you will have adequate signal coverage in the areas of interest.

  4. Step 4

The next coverage you need to check out is Data coverage. This is where it gets tricky. Notice that 3G mobile/broadband coverage is only the dark blue areas on the map. If your zip codes do not fall within the dark blue areas you will not have the fast 3G service.

  5. Step 5

GoPhone is for pay as you go voice calls. Use this only for pre-pay phones.

  6. Step 6

The Smart Limits coverage does not pertain to the iPhone and Mobile TV coverage is one of ATT's existing services that will depend on the type of account you have.

Tips & Warnings
  • Step-4 is the most critical check to ensure that you take advantage of all the great features of the iPhone 3G. This step will most likely decide whether you buy the new iPhone 3G and if it's worth your investment.
