Student teaching is hard! Here are some tips to make the process less painful.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Student teaching placement
  • A good attitude
  1. Step 1

Preparation is the most important part of teaching. If it is possible, meet with your supervising teacher before the first day of your placement. You are in his/her classroom and need to know the rules and procedures he/she expects. According to Harry Wong, the three most important things that must be taught the first week of school are discipline (Discipline: Set rules, consequences, and rewards immediately), procedures and routines. Remember that children will test you and that is why it is so important to have consequences ready. I had to learn this the hard way. Also, be firm and consistent. If you say no the first time, say no every single time.

  2. Step 2

Get to know your supervising teacher, other teachers, and especially the principal. You have to know the other teachers because they will be your biggest support system. They will provide insight into problems and difficulties you are having and suggest great lessons to teach.

The principal is your ticket to a job. Show the principal your hard work, dedication, and preparation. Invite him/her to the classroom when you are teaching or doing a special activity. I guarantee you that when a position opens at the school, you will be considered if you have a good relationship with your principal.

  3. Step 3

Attend faculty meetings and after school events that the school sponsors. This will get yourself out there and show everyone that you take this seriously. If you give 110% when you are student teaching, the principal will be assured that you will be just as hard working as an employee.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep a positive attitude.
  • Times get hard, but do not be discouraged.
  • Read Harry Wong's "The First Days of School" for extra advice.
  • Good Luck!
  • Some teachers do not want a student teacher. Be prepared if your teacher isn't welcoming you with open arms. In this case, show your supervising teacher how helpful you can be. This will change his/her attitude towards you.
