Here is a proven natural remedy for head lice that kills them by smothering.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • mayonnaise
  • or olive oil
  1. Step 1

Signs of head lice include itching toward the back of the head where the hair is thickest, hair having a strange odor, and visible lice and nits. Nits will be tiny white oblong shaped things attached firmly to hair follicle. You can tell them from dandruff because they are firmly attached to the hair shaft.
You will want to get a jar of regular mayonnaise and cover all parts of the head with it as well as the eye lashes.
If you are allergic to any ingredients in mayonnaise you can use olive oil instead.

  2. Step 2

Cover the entire head with mayo or olive oil and then cover with a shower cap. If you have hair coloring it may remove some of the color or change it slightly. Olive oil is better for colored hair.

  3. Step 3

Leave it on for as long as possible, at least an hour and a half or more. The longer the better.
Rinse out with tea tree oil shampoo or Denorex shampoo.
Comb out the nits with a nit comb or pet flea comb. You may have to pull each nit off the hair shaft with your fingers by sliding it down the hair shaft. Place nits in and rinse your fingers in a cup of alcohol.
You may need to repeat the mayo or olive oil process a couple of times to smother all nits. It is gentler on your hair than over the counter remedies that contain pyretherin.

Tips & Warnings
  • Check hair over the next few days for signs of remaining nits.

on 2/19/2009 It does work very well because I know people who have used the method, but I would be afraid of bacteria problems because of the raw eggs in the mayo. Olive oil, as you mentioned, is a great choice as well.

on 11/18/2008 I could have used this article last summer-may daughter's school had a bad problem with them and I hate the pesticide shampoo. I hope I never have to use this again, but will if the need arises! Thank you for a good article.
