Things You'll Need:
- misc. containers like:
- bins
- plastic containers
- under the bed containers
-
Step 1
Use those great under the bed storage containers. They are good for toys that have lots of small parts like blocks, train sets and other smaller toys. Or use them for out of season clothing.
-
Step 2
Keep a few plastic baskets in the room for tossing toys in during a quick pick up.
-
Step 3
Go through their clothes at least twice a year to weed out small clothes, since those kids grow like a weed. Do the same with toys for donating or tossing at least twice a year as well. We generally do this around Christmas and once in the summer. Making room before they have a birthday party is a great time too.
-
Step 4
Take advantage of hanging organizers in the closet to keep shoes, toys, clothes or books off the floor and easy to find. An over the door shoe hanger is what we use at our house. There are many compartments. My son puts shoes, wallets and belts in his.
-
Step 5
A shelf or hanging baskets in the closet is a great spot to storage clothes or toys!
-
Step 6
Try a rolling file drawer set in the closet. The ones with 3 or 4 big clear drawers are great for extra toy storage or clothing. You can also use these for craft materials in any area of the house.
-
Step 7
As they get older some families use a filing cabinet, in the child's room a useful place to store these items.
• art projects
• cards
• mementos
• pictures
• report cards
• school work
• stories etc... -
Step 8
Keep the kids involved in clean up. A great rule of thumb is, when you move on to some new toys clean up what you are finished playing with, this one requires training, training and more training.
-
Step 9
Use small drawer organizers in desk drawers. These can help keep art supplies under control. These can be used for crayons, pencils, glue, stickers, paper and coloring books.
-
Step 10
Naturally get a toy box. There are so many styles and types to choose from these days, finding just the right one should be easy. Even try having two, one in their room and one in the garage. We put outside toys in a large bin in the garage. This is a great place for water guns, bubbles, balls, plastic trucks and gardening toys.
-
Step 11
As your child is growing up have them get use to a regular time to clean up their room. You will be very glad you made this habit as time goes on.
