The "Ken Burns Effect" is the special effect in iMovie in which you can zoom in, out or across still pictures. This is the effect not created by, but perfected by Ken Burns, the famous Documentarian who did amazing documentaries on the Civil War and Baseball. The Ken Burns Effect keeps your movie from appearing like a boring powerpoint presentation and ads emphasis to still photos. Here are some tips for teaching it to your students.

Demonstrate how to import still pictures (jpgs, pngs) into iMovie. They do not necessarily have to be in iPhoto first, but it helps keep them organized.

Explain that whatever setting you have in the "show photo settings," all photos will be imported with those settings. This can be a huge time saver if you are importing many photos with the same settings.

      • 3

Click on either "media" and then "photos" or just "photos" depending on the version you are using.

      • 4

Within the photo box check the "Ken Burns" dialog box.

      • 5

Explain that you need to tell the computer where you want the picture zoom to start and end. You use the time bar to adust the length of the clip and the zoom bar to control the zoom, then you can grab the picture and adjust where you want the zoom/pan to go.
