Step 1
Look for wines with published ratings of 90 and above. These scores are based on evaluations by wine experts such as those at Wine Spectator (www.winespectator.com)and Wine Advisor (www.erobertparker.com)Robert Parker offers searchable databases with results from wine tastings.
-
Step 2
Looking at such ratings published on the websites mentioned above and in wine aficionado newsletters is a far better gauge of quality than by choosing by price and the appeal of the label.
-
Step 3
Select wine types that you are familiar with and have enjoyed such as Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Merlot, etc. Knowing what the gift recipient enjoys is a plus.
-
Step 4
Go to the store with a list of several suggested wines so that you will not be disappointed if your first choice is not available.
-
Step 5
Although Californian and French wines may be most familiar, look at wines from other interesting wine climates such as Australia, Chile, and other regions emerging as wine locations.
-
Step 6
Check out the list of recommended wines with ratings 90 and above that also have attractive price tags of $20 or less. See TIPS below.
