Being cut off in traffic is one of many things that annoy us as drivers. It's not hard to drive safely and courteously, but many people can't seem to get the hang of it. If everyone would follow these simple steps the roads would be safer.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Time
  • Patience
  • Common Sense
  • Manners
  • Driving skills
Step1
The first thing a person can do while driving that shows courtesy to other driver's is wait their turn to pull out into traffic. Pulling out in front of another driver is dangerous to both vehicles and is the cause of many accidents. There is nothing pressing enough to risk your life for! If you are going to pull out in front of another car you need to then get up to speed quickly. Pulling out in front of someone and continuing to go really slowly is very discourteous and dangerous.
Step2
Another thing people can do while driving that is courteous is to always use signals when turning and switching lanes. Giving advance warning of your intentions is a good practice and will help avoid fender benders.

When you do go to turn give plenty of notice with the signal, but don't take forever to do the turn. Coming to a complete stop to make a turn is very annoying to the driver behind you.
Step3
Another problem occurs at 4 way stops. The car on the left always goes first if everyone stops at the same time! Otherwise, whoever gets stopped first gets to go fist. Everyone trying to go at the same time causes problems.
Step4
Finally, always look when turning into traffic at yield signs. Even though you aren't required to stop, you should REALLY look before pulling out into traffic. Don't just assume everyone will stop for you.

Following these simple tips will make any trip safer and easier on you and your fellow drivers.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always look before pulling into traffic
  • Don't come to a complete stop before making a simple turn
  • Use your mirrors!
  • Don't try to beat traffic by pulling out in front of people!
  • Wear your seat belt!

on 8/23/2008 I've seen bad drivers everywhere. I think it's just that there's more traffic in general in cities than the country.

on 6/30/2008 I'm from the country, and most people in small towns drive nicely. It's when I go to the city I see the rude drivers. I guess they just live more fast paced lives then us city folk. Thanks for the article.
